The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, has lauded the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited for its bold and transformative initiatives aimed at promoting gender and youth inclusivity, transparency, and accountability in the oil and gas industry.
The commendation was made by Chairperson, NAWOJ FCT, Bassey Ita Ikpang, during a goodwill message at the One-Day Symposium themed “The Nigerian Petroleum Industry: The Way Forward,” held in Abuja.
Represented by the Vice Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, Rebecca Bolanle Ukpevo, Bassey praised NNPC’s commitment to inclusivity, stating, “Your dedication to driving growth and diversity in the oil and gas sector is truly commendable. As women journalists, we are not only chroniclers of events but advocates for transformative change”.
She was of the opinion that the symposium offers a platform to share ideas, amplify marginalised voices, and recommit to the values of fairness, accuracy, and accountability that define our profession.
Bassey said: “NAWOJians are proud to stand with NNPC in this journey towards a more inclusive and transparent industry. We thank the organisers for making us part of this vital discourse and look forward to impactful deliberations.”
The symposium, jointly organised by NNPC and Class Masters Limited, explored pathways to integrate gender and youth diversity into the oil and gas sector to maximise Nigeria’s energy potential.
It convened a distinguished panel of leaders and experts, including the President of the National Council of Women Societies, Mrs. Geraldine Etuk; former NAWOJ National President, Ms. Evelyn Onyilo; and NUJ FCT Chairman, Grace Ike.
Chief Moji Makanjuola, who moderated a panel at the event, underscored the importance of empowering youths to drive innovation and sustainable development in the industry.
Panelist Adeola Adebiyi, a Youth Corps Member, called for greater Nigerian ownership and control of the nation’s resources to accelerate progress.
In a keynote address, Professor Kayode Soremekun urged Nigerians to take charge of their oil and gas assets to fully realise the benefits of their natural resources.
He stressed the need for a paradigm shift in the sector, aligning with global best practices.
Lydia Samson of NTA News highlighted the industry’s pivot towards renewable and cleaner energy solutions, while expressing optimism about significant progress in 2025 and beyond.
Other notable resources at the event included Professor Edem Enang, an expert in Biodiversity Conservation, and Professor Oshita O. Oshita, Executive Director of the Ubuntu Centre for Africa Peacebuilding and Development.
