Ahead of the one-year remembrance of late Rafat Salami, a veteran journalist, the Guardians of Ahmed, a support group honoring her legacy, have raised ₦5.5 million and established a trust fund to support her son, Ahmed Salami.
Rafat Salami, who passed away on December 20, 2024, was an Assistant Director at the Voice of Nigeria and Treasurer of the Nigerian chapter of the International Press Institute.
Ahmed, who lives with autism, cerebral palsy, and ADHD, is under the care of his elder brother, Jameel Salami, in Abuja.
At a ceremony in Abuja, the group formally handed over the Fidelity Bank statement of the newly created Ahmed Salami Trust Fund to Jameel Salami. Ahmed is a confirmed signatory alongside members of the Board of Trustees, chaired by Dr. Jumai Ahmadu.
The total funds of ₦5,528,105.43 were contributed by supporters, including Lara Owoeye-Wise, Coordinator of the Guardians of Ahmed, and Daisy Jonathan, Coordinator of Warrior Mums Africa. The event was attended by stakeholders from education, media, and therapeutic services, as well as Fidelity Bank representatives.
Jameel Salami praised the initiative for its transparency and dedication, while Dr. Ahmadu highlighted the family’s commitment to Ahmed’s wellbeing and Rafat Salami’s enduring legacy.
Ahmed, who has continued to receive stable care, is coping with his mother’s loss, and remains eager to return to vlogging.
The Guardians of Ahmed are now encouraging donations directly to the trust fund, with a suggested minimum contribution of ₦12,000 annually to sustain Ahmed’s care and development.
